Firstly the schema. This is a small change (addition only) to the lower level docbook structural elements, as explained in The definitive guide. Note, that having extended docbook it is no longer docbook!
Next, when validating, I validate against
poem.rng, which is my extension. Within that file, I have the line
<include href="/sgml/docbook/v5/rng/docbookxi.rng">
which pulls in the main docbook v5 schema. Then my elements are defined as being interleaved (alterates to) the normal docbook elements. Take a look at it (part of the zip file) here, it is xml though. Relax NG format if you've never seen it before.
The final part is styling this new content, which, since it is not docbook, is not styled by the standard docbook stylesheets. For that, see Section 5, specifically note 7.
