Braille irregularities

One of the projects I've been interested in for a while now is braille generation. I've had more than a passing interest in standards for some time. The lack of standardisation in the world of braille is total. This extends from the poor uptake of even a single language standard such as UEBC through to the lack of standards for the embossed braille cell size, the codes needed to drive the embosser and any input format. I found it quite amazing that no one seems even vaguely interested. The language standards don't even use Unicode when describing the characters that are being defined as this braille cell combination or that. The typical usage is some printed glyph - no further definition, or for a section sign, u00A7 I see the glyph and the word section. Scary. My favourite has to be a vague hyphen glyph, the description 'long or stressed syllable'. No more. I wonder what that is.
