Linux for the desktop? A few people are asking that recently. This is my answer. I purchased a new PC, complete, a few days ago. Apart from a cockup by dabs.com; they choose to use a poor distribution network - I've taken delivery of a complete setup. CPU through to mouse. Unlike xNorm, I only installed a modest 240 Gb of disk space. One of the things I tried though, was switching my new monitor to my old system. Redhat Fedora Core 6. I powered down the old system. Plugged in the new monitor. Reboot. Expectation? 'new hardware found'. I'm lost. new driver wanted. Help. Actuality? FC6 didn't even blink. I was impressed. I think Linux is about ready for the desktop.
Minor aside. I chose a 'standard' (read old fashioned) 19 inch screen, cf the 'new' 16:10 ratio which are apparently cheaper to build. Mine is an Iiyama (pronounce as you will). It's lovely. Bright, clear. Big. Who gives a Dumblane about the speed. I like it.
