Usage of Fedora
Reading my bloglist this morning, I came across this article, an interview with the Fedora crowd. In it I read a statement Quote. Spevack says that "about 98% of the machines registered show up as being in runlevel 5," which is the default runlevel for desktop users. End quote. So FC7 is being used by desktop users, by and large. lvm is clearly targeted at other than desktop users (who need to manage big disk sets). The lvm documentation is weak, to put it politely. To me that says the devs aren't getting user requests for documentation. Again another pointer to a more sophisticated user base. Why the heck won't Fedora listen to it's own figures?
Another connection I made was from this. Guy called Con Kolivas, left kernel dev committer role. Why? His big complaint was, quote The developers were all developing for something that wasn't the desktop. They had all been employed by big name manufacturers who couldn't care less about the desktop. End quote. His patches were all aimed at desktop usage of Linux. Fedora figures intimate that this is the big user. Yet the kernel isn't developed for them? I respect the guy for publishing his views. I think he's right.
Something isn't right. Linux is moving in the direction of the corporates, the lone user is no longer a target? Who's the next Linus? Is he or she waiting in the wings? We'll see.
