I've just ordered my first 'thumb drive', one of those tiny usb memory stick things. I looked at a 1.8" ssd disk, but decide three fifty pounds UK was a bit steep. Eighteen for 16Gb seemed a better bet, just less pose value.

The reason I want it is to have with me a 'working environment'. Due the enormous cock-up I made I'm now quite aware of what I need above an operating system, so I'm starting to think on the tortoise side. What do I need to carry with me to provide a reasonable setup? This is my initial thinking

• emacs
• emacs site-lisp with all my toys.... about 8 in total
• My .emacs
• Java 1.6
• XEP
• Saxon 6.55 and 9
• oXygen - more as a nice to have, a worthy backup Editor
• The Unix Utils for Windows
• Jing, Trang, MSV to back up xml editing
• Snagit and TextPad, latter as just plain useful
• Unipad, still unique, still a brilliant tool for character problems.
• Python, probably 2.6 and 4suite.
• XoM, since it seems to be getting more use over time!

That's my list after a day or so thinking. Some Windows only, some would need both copies, hence the large(ish) drive. No doubt I'll be missing something if I start using it. Good start though
