Tomcat 6 tutorial

Back in 2005 I blogged about setting up Tomcat (5.5) on a Redhat server for use in RNIB. I found it very frustrating. Different reasons (Atom based, more later, if I get it working this time) and I'm back with Tomcat 6. After about 4 days and lots of help from the Tomcat user list, I've finally managed to run (and document) my setup experience. I can only guess that Tomcat is so 'flexible' and hence the documentation has to cover so many options that it leaves out some combinations. Anyway, I'm up and working and can move on now. I did find there to be a dearth of TC tutorials though.

Having done a dry run for the Tomcat tutorial I'm now reading about security under TC, since my initial suggestions were met with near derision on the TC list. Since the end point won't be browser based I'm unsure which security method to use. I'm quite sure that passing username and password in clear text over the connection isn't a good idea. More pondering and perusing as the snow threatens to come back again next week. Wind this time. Agreed, nowhere near as bad as Canada has had it, but, for us, quite a change
